I must say, I really do love my communications class. The first unit we've been studying has been on listening. Before we began, we did an evaluation about what we think of our own communication skills.
Note: I really did think that listening was one of my weaknesses. But now that I've been in there for a bit, I can actually see where my mom has taught me great listening skills, and where I didn't soak everything in there, the mission finished teaching me the excellent skill of so doing.
We did an exercise about that how we feel when people do and do not listen to us. It was really interesting to learn how many people are annoyed when we don't listen. It put a new perspective on things I've done in the past, such as not listening to my (jerk) boss from Publix when he was lecturing. For the first time in my life, I realized he was probably thinking, "Why won't this dumb kid listen to me?"
Open mouth, insert foot.
(On a positive note, I noted to the class that last evening, on a date (there was applause, haha), the girl and I were talking, and we were both listening, giving feedback, and we actually wanted to talk to each other. Should I use this in my paper due next week? Opinion, please.)
Dennis. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, you should probably use that. Personal examples are always good. :)
I took a communications class last year, and I found it really helped. I ended up being able to better my relationship with my family, friends, and even Tyler! It was great. Now I find that I'm being able to be a better support to him on his mission (which, by the way, seems like it is taking stinking forEVER).
And as for your jerk boss...if he was a jerk, he probably didn't deserve your attention anyway! Haha. :)
